Interpretive Licenses Workshops: Writing Licenses and Playing with the Laws on Borders
  • Duration
    • 1hr
  • Aim
    • The aim of this workshop is to think about fluidity and interpretation in laws that create restrictions and borders. It is more relavant to creators since the licensing agreements apply to creations and creators of all kinds experience some form of it through their work. One of the goals of RESURRECTION as a project has been to point out legal deprecation infrastructures that target borders. Personally I think this border between the artwork and the public is very important and is the most open to experimentation.
  • Structure
    • We start by an introduction to licenses and how have they been evolving since the popularisation of printing press. Here is the licenses timeline I made for this workshop. We think and talk about contracts and licenses that protect artworks. Then we think about audiences that interact with these contracts, who are we dealing with? Who are we not dealing with? Then we proceed to writing our licenses keeping in mind what kind of collaboration we expect from the public regarding our chosen art works.
  • Documentation
    • Here are the licenses each of us wrote for our own thesis:

    • Dear human makers,
      propagate with care, and cite
      if not, go to jail

    • Dissemination
      or experimentation
      is for the lovers

      if you find it cringe
      you shall not reuse, remix
      or make a profit

      Claude and co, get fucked
      this belongs to the fangirls
      to remix and share

    • I AM WHAT HAPPENS AROUND ME. A REMIX
IDEAS ARE IN THE AIR TO PICK
I GIVE THEM A VOICE, THEY ARE THEIR OWN
NOTHING CAN EVER BE ONLY MINE
      I AM, BECAUSE OF YOU
      I AM, OF YOU
LET'S PROMISE TO NOT CLAIM THE AIR ABOVE OUT HEADS
IT IS OUT AU TO SHARE
      THE WORLD IS A REMIX
      I CRAVE FOR CONTINUATION, COLLABORATION
      IT'S ABOUT THE IDEA
NOT WHO GAVE IT A VOICE
AND IN MY OPINION ITS ALWAYS BETTER AS A REMIX

    • This work is a piece of me,
but I did not make it all
It's made from the parts of others
      generously given.
I am the collector, who wants this work to be seen.
      but also to be seen.

    • I'm a hideous weird Creature, made by Sevgi Tan. My birthday was in July 2026. I'm scared of people and don't know what they will think of me. But in order to be courageous, i wanted to let you know Reader, you can share me with whomever you like. Read me and if necessary even clone me.
If you wish, im at your service to be of help and work together. However, my parts that make me are now fragile and special. They can't be taken out of me, i can't endure the same pain twice. Spare me of your exacto knife and let me stay whole.

    • This work is a piece of me,
but I did not make it all
It's made from the parts of others
      generously given.
I am the collector, who wants this work to be seen.
      but also to be seen.

    • Burn After Reading License
not only can you not copy or reuse it, you are obligated to burn it after reading.
in terms of reproduction and adaptation, whatever you remember from it, you're permitted to do whatever you want with it.
in terms of distribution, only through oral transmission.
in terms of performance, you can only recite it once and then you're obligated to burn it, so full permission to perform publicly.

    • License for a Magic Commons
Under the spell of this license,
      All work becomes occult knowledge,
All author becomes a witch in the shape of a bird,
All spectator a worm awaiting transformation.
Under the spell of the Magic Commons,
      All knowledge becomes revealed,
All revelation a bird song at dawn,
And every bird, once worm, a spell-casting witch.

    • Can I share something with you? I want to speak to you freely, hear what I say well:
I want to promise you one thing, I want to share everything that I know of, all the information I hold dear. My memory often deceives me, so what I tell you must be quick and has to be written down now. The information I share with you can be confined to some contract or agreement, would you like to take on this challenge with me?
I truly promise to share everything that I know of with you, so don't you worry, we can work this out together. It is important that you write down what I am about to tell you, as everything that is not now saved, will be entirely lost.

    • People Asking Nicely And Personally (PaNaP) License
This license permits individuals listed in the license of remixing and republishing of a given work.

      • the user has to acknowledge metadata as communication[1] medium and not technical discard
      • the prohibition to use it for purposes that are
        • extractive
        • machine learning / generative
        • increase market production efficiency
        • surveillance of personal data
      • acknowledgement that legibility is neither absolute nor positive and is treated contextually:
        • parts might remain visible to some that are hidden to others on purpose
      • to use this license, all participants of a project have to:
        • agree to its terms of conditions
      • metadata is open for citation, share, adaptation under the condition that all generating entities are named[2]
      • adaptation (?)
      1. communication is open to interpretation, at first non-communicative expressions included
      2. this involves authors, collaborators, kin, software, engines ...
